Since 2006, the Styrian Photography Biennale photo graz has been dedicated to showcasing the contemporary photography scene in Graz and Styria. Featuring contributions from 150 photographers, photo graz 024 presented a multifaceted snapshot of Styria’s vibrant photographic landscape. The exhibition photo graz selection VI highlights 25 selected positions, offering insight into the diversity, relevance, and vitality of this artistic community.
Graz, Austria’s second-largest city, emerged in the 1950s as a hub for progressive photography—surpassing even Vienna, the federal capital at the time, in terms of production and exchange. This tradition continues today, forming the foundation for the size and diversity of this scene.
The exhibition spans 65 years between the oldest (born in 1940) and the youngest artist (born in 2005), a period in which both the technical aspects of photography and the societal landscape have undergone profound transformations. Social and geopolitical shifts have continuously introduced new topics into artistic discourse. The exhibition explores themes of self-representation, identity, and the portrayal of women, while also addressing a wide range of pressing socio-cultural issues—including climate change, migration, and gender perspectives.
Techniques from the early days of photography—such as the camera obscura, solargraphy, stereoscopy, and photograms—stand alongside images that incorporate AI as a creative tool. This exhibition provides an opportunity to reflect on the diverse perspectives and methodologies that define contemporary photography.
