Marko Marković

Marko Marković, born in 1983, is a celebrated Croatian artist known for his versatile approach, particularly in the realm of performance art. He holds a degree in Painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Split, an educational degree from the University of Zadar, and a Master’s in Art and Science from the University of Applied Arts in Vienna.

His provocative work critiques societal norms and has garnered recognition, including the YVAA/Young Visual Artist/Radoslav Putar Award in 2011, which brought him to New York from 2011 to 2014. During this period, he served as a project coordinator at the Matthew Barney Studios before relocating to Vienna in 2015.

Marković’s roots as a painter influence the refined aesthetics of his diverse forms of expression, spanning performances, drawings, photography, video/film, sculpture (including Ready-Mades), and installations, as well as music projects with the collective “Ausländer”. His art serves as a vehicle for direct commentary on political and social issues, often challenging established norms and perceptions.

Marko Marković questions power structures, political systems, and pushes societal taboos, unafraid to employ radical performative statements. In his performances, he utilizes his body to narrate tales of open resistance and inner conflicts, embodying emotionally charged struggles for power and submission. The associated art of self-harm also serves as an assault on the audience, merging victim and aggressor into one.

Marković has organized events such as the DOPUST/Days of Open Performance Festival (2008-2019 in Croatia, the USA, and Austria) to foster cultural exchange. Serving as a program coordinator for the European Capital of Culture Rijeka 2020 and lecturing at esteemed institutions like UDK Berlin and the University of Applied Arts Vienna, he has significantly contributed to advancing artistic discourse.

His work has been showcased internationally at prestigious venues including the MMSU Rijeka, the Venice Architecture Biennale, the International Youth Biennale Moscow, the Vienna Festival Weeks, the Prague Biennale, the Kunsthalle Wien, and the Kunsthaus Graz, solidifying his influence on contemporary art.
