VM | Fat Pig
FAT PIG, 2015, Performative Installation (solo show) Defibrillator Gallery, Chicago
Fat Pig is no
understatement, it is the appropriation of the energy of its opponents. Fat Pig
is an expression of anger and the search for truth in the opinion jungle of nutrition fundamentalists,
self-proclaimed health experts, and know-it-alls.
Fat Pig is
indeed also the question, “What do we actually eat and how do we eat
it. Why do we eat it?
How is it grown and produced? And why have people stopped cooking?” I
approach these questions with the principle of “treating the similar
with the similar" - namely with
food.
The
exhibition consisted of a 4 1/2-hour opening performance in a
kitchen-like environment.
During the one-week exhibition the kitchen installation was
continuously used, and in particular for a brunch concurrent to the
one-hour artist lecture “I want to live forever.”* Another
important part of the week was a video screening about body diversity of work by six different artists.
FAT PIG, 2015, Performative Installation (solo show) Defibrillator Gallery, Chicago
At 7:00 pm four performers and I enter the space and put on green and
gold aprons. While Sharon Hoyer, Chris Puente, Angela Trakas and I move
into the kitchen installation and start cooking, Emer
Kinsella stands on a pedestal and begins to play her violin. A
subdued and sacred atmosphere fills the room.
Soon the first course, the aperitif, is ready, I put the cups on a
tray and adjourn directly to two empty pedestals. I turn one pedestal
upside down and one after the other I throw the cups into
the container before I return to the kitchen space. Over the next 4
1/2 hours, this dumping scenario is repeated for all other courses with
different protagonists.
Hours later, the Defibrillator Gallery is a condensed, heated
atmosphere, and the crowd rushes eagerly to the outgoing trays: chicken,
carrot soup, a vibrant spaetzle with lentils, fried
vegetable chips. Fat is in the air. Also we sweat. At one point,
Chris Puente runs to the pedestals with chocolate desserts. The people
loudly. The violin only whispers at this point.
After the last course, the filled-up pedestals are turned back over,
the aprons are hung back on the wall and all the performers leave the
room. The audience applauds.

VM | Woman laughing alone with salad
Woman laughing alone with salad, 2014, photo: Robert Bodnar, (c) Veronika Merklein
Woman laughing alone with salad originated from the search engine-optimized term, ”Women laughing alone with salad”. Using that term you will find lean smiling women with natural make-up, bright clothes in an inviting setting, who eat green or mixed salad. Referring to a psychopathology of fatness and the corresponding pictorial propaganda in which overweight people are represented as ”fat, lazy and stupid,” these (re)presentations are thwarted in the work.
Daddy's little Girl lädt zum Essen (Daddy's little Girl invites for dinner), 2014, Das YIX, Vienna
The photo-food-art-work Woman laughing alone with salad as well as the offical part Daddy's little Girl lädt zum Essen (Daddy's little Girl invites for dinner) is a continuation of the work cycle „Redefining Fat Identity“. I would like to point out a hardly questioned discrimination of fat people and different bodies in general on a daily basis. Especially bodies of fat people are sensitive targets for arguments of different political and medical views. But, what is more, I would like to strengthen enjoyment in connection with contemplation, sensibilities and downshifting.

Life-long Weight-Gaining Stand-up (photo print, 170 x 60cm), Postcard (21 x 14,8cm): Life-Long Weight-Gaining, 2013, Performance installation (solo exhibition) Neuer Kunstverein Wien, curated by Felicitas Thun-Hohenstein
”Life-Long Weight-Gaining” is the awards ceremony of a fictional
beauty contest. It ironically overacts the cult of skinniness as it
awards for ”life-long weight-gaining”.
Within a live-performance, exhibition, and intervention in public
space, the artist not only highlights the practice of discrimination
against heavy people. In a humorous manner it also invites a
maddening affirmation of fatness.
In this performative installation, one can see the ”LIfe-Long
Weight-Gaining” sash upon a life-sized cardboard stand-up of myself. The
stand-up serves as a placeholder for heavy people. It shows
myself as a (half)naked body. One foot rests on several stacked
bathroom scales while I hold my ”love handles” in my hands.
Life-Long Weight-Gaining, 2013 Performance installation (solo exhibition) Neuer Kunstverein Wien, curated by Felicitas Thun-Hohenstein
Within the installation a live performance takes place. I stand on the stacked scales, which have been cast out of chocolate, as the chocolate melts from my body heat. I am naked, my body is painted in an artificial skin color, and my hair is hidden underneath a mask of the same artificial color. A kind of a seam, an outline, runs across my skin which imitates the two parts of a casting form (e.g. chocolate easter bunnies).
The heroic gesture of the cardboard stand-up is in dialogue with the vulnerability of the naked performer within the installation. Furthermore, this dialogue is accompanied by the question of exhibiting performance art–a balancing act between an object in motion and a motionless subject (as theorized by French curator, Pierre Bal-Blanc)…
Happy Valentine's day, Object (Photgraphy, foliert, auf Aluminium kaschiert, MDF-Sockel lackiert, 6kg Pralinen, 110x40x65cm) | Life-Long Weight-Gaining, 2013, Performance installation (solo exhibition), Neuer Kunstverein Wien, curated by Felicitas Thun-Ho
The third art work in the exhibition is called ”Happy Valentine’s Day”. A photo collage of two photographs lies on the oblique surface of a pedestal which is filled up with pralines to two-thirds. The upper part of the collage shows my faultless face. In the bottom part of the photo my heavy belly with stretch-marks appears slowly when the pralines are eaten. Pralines represent the ambivalence between pleasure and sin. The single candy resembles a fat cell in its cross-section. The know-how of manufacturing chocolate candies is always accompanied by the question: ”What is inside?”. This question is not only foiled by the lively hollow shape of the performer but could be interpreted in a more common sense. Our culture is determined by ritualized enjoyment and the claim of life-long abstemiousness (e.g. ”restraint eating”).
