Eating and drinking are among the basic human needs, but since time immemorial the communal meal has transcended the function of mere food intake. Sensuality and enjoyment, the foundation of community, the representation of social status, ritual acts are just some of the aspects that have been associated with the meal. Art has always reacted to our ways of sharing a meal, our chosen foods and dishes, representing, analysing, abstracting, critically and, of course, ironically. Throughout the ages and in a wide variety of media - sculpture, graphics, painting, photography and video art - the exhibition negotiates, among other things, the communal aspects of the meal: in families, on official occasions, in the political as well as religious context of different cultural contexts.
